Fire and Smoke Restoration

Fires are devastating to homes and businesses and the damage can be extensive. The GSR team has the tools and expertise to return your home or business back to normal.

Even after a fire has been extinguished, damage from the soot and smoke to your home and belongings continues. Many synthetic items such as furniture and flooring materials can be found around the home and office; when burned, they generate complex chemical reactions. Within 72 hours items that have come in contact with these chemicals can go from cleanable to unsalvageable.

GSR technicians are experts at understanding the chemical combinations that can clean and save salvageable belongings, helping mitigate additional expenses and sometimes save irreplaceable keepsakes.

At GSR we use best equipment the industry has to offer, proven techniques and products in our fire and smoke restoration process:

  • Pre-cleaning (emergency wipe down).

  • Source removal (charred, burnt, and unsalvageable items)

  • Content inspection and cleaning.

  • Content pack-out and storage if necessary.

  • Wall, outlets, fixtures, HVAC, ducting, and ceiling cleaning.

  • Deodorization.

Things to consider:

  • Wearing a proper respirator mask is highly recommended to protect from airborne toxins.

  • Corrosive byproducts generated by burning synthetic materials can cause irreversible etching in as little as 72 hours. Time is of the essence call GSR professionals.

  • If the temperature outside is above 60 degrees, open windows to air out the structure to reduce smoke odor.

  • Wipe down chrome, porcelain, Formica, and aluminum fixtures to prevent permanent tarnishing or etching.

  • If you have a forced hot air furnace or HVAC system replace the air filter(s).

  • Dampen cheesecloth and tape it over returns and supply registers to capture airborne soot.

  • Dispose of all open food packages and record for insurance records.

  • If the power is out, remove food from the refrigerator/freezer and leave the doors open.

  • Bring clothing with smoke damage to a qualified restoration dry cleaner.

  • Wear latex or nitrile gloves when handling smoke damaged items. Oils from your bare hands can permeate textiles, walls and woodwork, which could cause additional damage.

  • Improper cleaning of walls and ceilings of soot residue can complicate the restoration process.

  • Do not attempt to clean textiles (carpets or upholstered furniture) with household cleaners.

  • Do not use electrical appliances until having them checked by a qualified appliance technician.

  • Do not turn on ceiling fixtures if they were exposed to water.
